Teacher Profile

Lilli Ann Miller

email: lilliann.miller@prepclasses.org

Lilli Ann Miller holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of the Philippines at Los Baños, where she also served as an instructor in biology and genetics for three years.  She obtained her Master of Science in Biology from the University of Houston, thanks to a grant from the Fulbright-Hays program and a teaching fellowship from UH. She taught undergraduate lab classes in biology while working on her graduate degree and pursued research in molecular genetics.

She began her journey as a home educator when her oldest child started school in 1996. Over the years, her family participated in various co-ops in the Houston area where she taught history, literature, elementary science, and biology to students from K-12th grade. She also had an opportunity to teach biology remotely to high school students in other states through the HSLDA Online Academy.  As a homeschool mom, she enjoyed organizing and coordinating support group activities such as fellowship meetings, field trips, spelling bees, holiday events, and end-of-the-school year programs.

After 27 years of homeschooling, Lilli Ann is thankful to continue being involved in the homeschooling community by teaching at PREP.  She and her husband, Jeff are blessed with five grown children who have all taken classes from PREP as well.  Their four older children are all out of college and their youngest child is now attending UH. The Millers have participated in home churches for more than 30 years.  Lilli Ann and Jeff love to travel, catch up with friends, enjoy movie nights with the family and visits with the grandkids.

Teacher's Classes

Come and explore God's biological creation and learn important skills through the study of life science. This course will examine living things, how they work, and how they relate with all parts of their environment —starting with the fascinating world of cells, to the hierarchy of organisms like bacteria, protists, fungi, plants, animals, and humans. All these concepts are approached with the goal to better understand the living world that God created.

Class format includes a lecture which introduces the chapter concepts and prepares students for the laboratory exercises and periodic testing. This class is also designed to teach and hone skills in the following areas as they get ready for high school and beyond:

*Note taking - students are introduced to different methods of recording important points from the lecture.

*Critical thinking - students learn to analyze and evaluate given information through facilitated class discussions

*Study strategies - students discover how they learn best by reinforcing acquired information in a various ways for greater retention.

*Lab technique - students develop proper practical techniques during microscopy when they study cells, when performing dissections of specimens like earthworms, perch, and shark, and while conducting other lab experiments.

*Research - students go through a guided research paper-writing process on a major biome.

*Public speaking/oral reporting - students have an opportunity to share what they learned about their biome when they give a formal presentation of their paper.

Parents are expected to partner with Mrs. Miller to ensure their student's success. The Parent Section of the class website (link below) is updated weekly so parents can oversee their student's completion of assignments and help them review for testing. Come explore the fascinating study of LIFE!

  • Students will embark on a comprehensive survey of God’s creation by exposure to different fields in the biological sciences, from the study of the fundamental unit of life in cell biology to understanding the human body in anatomy and physiology. They will investigate what makes up living things, how they work, and how they relate with one another and the physical world.
  • Current advances in biotechnology, environmental issues, and their social implications, as well as theories of origins are discussed from biblical and secular perspectives.
  • In addition to lectures and class discussions, other activities include experiments, microscopy, and dissections — all designed for better understanding of biological concepts.
  • There will be opportunities to hone research and oral presentation skills in preparation for collegiate work. Students will write two short scientific papers: one on a biotechnology topic of their choice (fall semester) and another on a human body disease/disorder (spring semester). They will also research proofs to build a persuasive outline on creation vs. evolution and have a chance to team teach selected topics in ecology.
  • A special project in the spring is the collection and classification of leaves and wildflowers. It is a wonderful way to experience greater awareness of beauty, order, and design in nature!
  • Parents are expected to partner with Mrs. Miller to ensure their student’s success. The Parent Section of the class website (link below) is updated weekly so parents can check and oversee student’s homework and completion of assigned tasks.
